Teen Intervention
Almost all teen intervention happens when families are unable to control their teens due to behavioral issues, drug abuse or alcohol abuse. Although teen intervention is extremely effective, most families sadly try and wait to see if the behaviors or substance abuse is just a phase, however for many the addiction ends up g
etting worse. When families have teen intervention before adulthood it can give the interventionist and the family more leverage and control of the situation because they are still considered minors. Teen intervention is different because of the adolescent brain development and maturity level of a young person. It is difficult for a teen to realize long term consequences because teens think the are invincible and everything is their parents fault. Parents involved in teen intervention should try to recognize that they do have full leverage of the situation because the teen substance abuser is not an adult and basically has to obey the family, whether the teen substance abuser likes it or not.
Adolescent Intervention
Family First Intervention is not a big advocate for taking adolescent substance abusers to a treatment center against their will. An adolescent intervention is almost always successful at the loving, caring, willingness level. Adolescent intervention shows families that they have more control over their teen substance abuser than they think. It is important to remember that the main focus of teen intervention is to obtain willingness from the young substance abuser just like an adult intervention. It is extremely important to obtain a professional for an adolescent intervention because of the effect the drug or alcohol abuse is having on the development of the adolescent brain. Adolescent brain development is disrupted during teen years when alcohol and drugs are used. It is not a mystery that many adult men and woman act like children in adult rehabs when they abused drugs or alcohol at an early age. This is because their brains were not given the chance to develop properly. Families have to ask themselves how long are they willing wait before they rule out the substance abuse as "just a phase" for their young family member. It is important to consult with a professional before attempting a teen intervention. The longer families wait to stage a teen intervention the more damage could potentially result to your teens brain development.
Teen Intervention Information
When an adolescent starts heavily abusing drugs and alcohol, their brain development basically suspends growth at that point. It is not uncommon in adult rehabs to see grown men and woman who are in their 40's, that started using drugs at age 15 or younger, laughing at childish things and watching cartoons during free times as if they were children again. It is almost always a better choice for families to turn to teen intervention and treatment for teen substance abuser than to a psychiatrist or doctors who will just drug them and numb their emotions. The last thing a family wants to do is, replace drugs and alcohol with more drugs. Teen substance abusers are self medicating some form of trauma or uncomfortable feelings, the last thing they need is psychiatric medications that are going to disrupt brain development. Putting children on psychiatric medications at an early age before choosing teen intervention and treatment will probably make them dependent on the psychiatric medications for life, making withdrawal in the adult years almost impossible. More drugs and psychiatry are not always the answers to your teens underlying issues.
