Substance Abuse Intervention

Substance abuse intervention is one of the most popular interventions we do for families and addicts or alcoholics.  When we receive a call for substance abuse intervention we tell families that the substance itself is not actually the problem with their loved one but rather a solution to the uncomfortable feelings they are trying to medicate.  If the problem was the substance abuse alone and nothing else, the problem would be far easier to fix.  When our counselors are preparing families for the substance abuse intervention, one of the most important things we discuss is how the substance abuse has become everybody else’s problem and fault.  Unless families are capable of giving the problem back to their loved one, the substance abuser may not be capable of realizing they even have a problem.  During substance abuse intervention program we have realized that most all substance abusers are intelligent, self centered individuals, who blame their problems on everyone else and lack accountability for the complications arising from the addiction.  Unless your loved one takes accountability for their actions and stops blaming every problem on everyone else the substabce abuser will almost never have a problem to fix.  Your loved one is using substances to numb reality, it is the job of the substance abuse intervention program to help the family help your loved one to treatment so the addict or alcoholic does not have to escape reality any longer.

Substance Abuse Intervention Program

Substance abusers almost never realize the problem is the drugs or alcohol.  The sad reality when talking with families about the substance abuse intervention program is, the addict or alcoholic tries feverishly to somehow control all the problems that arise from the alcohol or drug abuse, rather than try to recognize that the drug or alcohol abuse is what is causing the problems.  How many times meeting with families for the substance abuse intervention program do we hear things from families of how their loved one thinks all they need is a job and then their money problems will go away.  The reality is, if the substance abuser stopped spending all their money on drugs or alcohol they could then probably hold on to a job and in turn hold on to their money.  Examples like this is what a substance abuse intervention counselor faces on a daily basis.  The hardest part is convincing the family that their loved one can almost never turn their addiction around and solve their problems with just a job.  If it was that easy we would be head hunters instead of substance abuse intervention specialist.  The whole point is, the problem is the person and not the drugs or alcohol.  This is why getting a job, meeting that special someone, or making a geographical escape instead of going to a treatment center is almost never a successful option.

Intervention for Substance Abuse

Intervention for substance abuse is usually the only thing that can change the mind of your loved one.  Substance abuse is not a super complex thing, in fact it is quite simple to explain and understand.  Your loved one abuses substances because they are not capable at this time to face uncomfortable feelings or situations without drugs or alcohol.  The drug addict or alcoholic is using the substances as a coping mechanism for their problems.  Substance abuse intervention is designed to have your loved one willingly accept help and head off to a treatment center that can help your loved become capable of handling situations without drugs or alcohol.  Families must understand that it is better to do a substance abuse intervention on the families terms, than it is to wait for an intervention on someone else’s terms.
